If you have never suffered from the pain and anguish of a broken heart then it's unlikely that you can
 fully imagine how real and how physical that pain can be.

And anyone whose heart has broken knows it all too well, even if they can't always put it into words.

A 'broken heart' refers to a range of mental, emotional and physical phenomena that follow a severe loss,
 bereavement, rejection, fall from status or failure:
                                                
A symtoms of a broken heart

Tight feeling in the chest
'Dropping' feeling or ache in the stomach, or 'anxiety stomach' (like nerves before a test or exam)
Loss of appetite
Broken sleep patterns (unable to sleep, sleeping too much)
Lethargy, energy loss

Emotional

Mood swings
Uncontrollable moods of grief (crying), despair, anxiety or anger
Blame and/or regret, or feelings of guilt
Irritability, intolerance of others
Apathy (lack of emotional response; 'emptiness' inside)

Mental

Inability to concentrate
Attention fixed on the person or event connected with the loss
Lowered self-esteem
Always thinking about the past; can't see the point of starting anything new

Sudden stresses and shocks can produce similar effects. A 'broken heart' can even lead to a physical condition in which the heart muscles weaken.

There are many other possible symptoms or effects. These are some of the more common ones. The main thing to remember is that these are temporary negative feelings which will ease and heal with time. And you can accelerate that process.

There are ways to heal a broken heart and get back to normal life, staying busy  is very important parts of the healing process. Simple but powerful elements such as your diet, daily walks, the right company and productive work can put the pieces back together again in less time than if you dwelled on your misfortune  and can speed up a brighter future.

Making major decisions is not a good idea while your heart is broken. Get yourself back to normal, more or less, before important judgments are needed! Or ask someone whose judgment you trust for an opinion.

Remember, a broken heart doesn't last forever. Keep going forward and you'll come out all right.
