I was starting to get really worried about Jed. He wasn't answering my calls. I didn't see him around any more. What was going on?
After a few weeks of not seeing him, I really started to wonder. I asked around all his usual friends that I could contact. It was a bit weird. Clearly something was up. They all sounded … cautious.
Eventually I bumped into Ben, his oldest friend. "What's going on?!" I said. "Where's Jed these days?"
"Didn't you hear?" Ben said sadly. "Jo-Anne broke up with him. He's … desperate. Trying to get back together with her again. Can't deal with it, doesn't know what to do. I've done everything I could …"
I was stunned. Jed - the life and soul of the party, the guy with the instant wit, the big smile? Girls fell at his feet. How could he be so broken up?
"That's terrible," I told Ben. "What's he doing about it?"
"He tried calling her, begging her - chicks are supposed to go for that emotional stuff. Nothing doing. She says she 'just wants to be friends'."
I nodded grimly. I'd heard that one myself a few times.
"So now he's sitting in front of the computer all day typing in 'get ex back' and 'how to get ex back' and 'to get back with ex' - hoping to find the magic formula."
"Jeez. That is rough. So he thinks he can say to the internet 'get ex back' and someone is going to give him the recipe for regaining lost love on a print-out or something?"
"That's about it. It's tragic, but what can we do?"
We parted pretty quiet and downcast. It's bad seeing something like that happen to a friend.
A few weeks later I was passing through town again and I saw Jed! Not only that, but he had a girl on his arm … a VERY hot girl … it was Jo-Anne! Nice dress, make-up - I hardly recognised her. My jaw dropped. Jed just waved at me and laughed.
I waited till they were round the corner and called Ben.
"I just saw Jed - and Jo-Anne! What the hell??!!"
Ben laughed. "You know I was telling you he was this sad nutcase spending all his time on the computer? Turns out he found something after all. Something to get an ex back. Guaranteed!"
"Guaranteed?" I asked. Despite myself my mind turned to my latest break-up. I'd regretted it. Maybe there was a way of getting back together with her after all?
"What was it he found?" I said, casually.
"Oh - something pretty amazing from the sound of it. He told me he'd got something amazing and then three days later he was back together with Jo-Anne. It was like a book or a manual or something - precise instructions about what to do, what not to do, how to say things, what your game plan should be. What was it called? Magic something. THE MAGIC OF MAKING UP. That was it."
Damn, I thought. I went straight home and got on the internet. And the link I found got me right back together with Mel … the love of my life after all. And that link looked something like this:
